712 - Lady Griz Basketball

Montana 56, Northern Colorado 43

Star of the game: Montana senior guard Kenzie De Boer scored a game-high 19 points, hitting 3 of 6 attempts from 3-point range. She also had two assists.

Reasons for optimism:

1. Defense. The Lady Griz played some of their best defense of the season in their biggest game, holding Northern Colorado to just 43 points on 31.9 percent shooting (15 for 47).

2. Jordy Sullivan. The Sidney standout has played some of the best basketball of her career in Montana’s last three contests. On Saturday she scored 10 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

3. Rebounding. The Lady Griz were playing against the best rebounding team (statistically speaking) in the Big Sky. But you never would have guessed by the way UM beat the Bears on the boards, 42-34. Katie Baker had nine rebounds and Maggie Rickman eight for the champs.

4. 3-point shooting. At one point in the first half of Saturday’s game, the Lady Griz were 4 for 6 from behind the arc. That really helped open things up for better looks in the paint. UM did eventually cool off and finish 6 for 15 from 3-point land, but you still have to say they did a good deal of damage from downtown.

Reasons for concern:

1. Shooting. The Lady Griz won despite shooting 27.3 percent from the floor (15 for 55). But in their defense, they were up against a formidable UNC defense.

1. Shanae Gilham injury. The Lady Griz may have lost her for the remainder of the season with a right knee injury. It;s not a devastating loss but it is significant. Montana will need all the sharpshooters it can get in the NCAA tournament, and Gilham is among the best on the team.
