The JC basketball Southern California regional finals are set.
San Bernardino Valley will play a men’s and women’s doubleheader Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College, which has the top-seeded team on the women’s side and the No. 3 team on the men’s.
The Wolverine men held off rival Mt. San Jacinto 58-56 on Wednesday night and beat Riverside City College in the previous round, making SBVC the unofficial Inland champion although there are loftier goals.
“I feel like we’re the best team in the state and that’s what we want to prove in the playoffs,” guard Gerry Blakes said.
As a No. 10 seed, SBVC could be considered the underdog, but the Wolverines have been playing as well as anybody over the past two weeks.
No. 1 Saddleback will host No. 4 Chaffey in the other semifinal, with the two SoCal winners advancing to the state semifinals.
The SBVC women cruised to their fourth straight win over LA Valley and now face the biggest challenge of the year with Saturday’s final at No. 1 Mt. SAC. The defending state champion Mounties are 31-0 and have been one of the favorites for a state title all season.
The Mt. San Jacinto women’s team earned the home court advantage by winning the Foothill Conference and the Eagles haven’t missed a beat in the postseason. They won their two games by 15 and 14 points and feature one of the most dynamic scorers in the state in Tina Fantroy. MSJC will host No. 10 Moorpark on Saturday.
