The College of Central Florida men's basketball team took State College of Florida-Manatee out of its game in the quarterfinals of the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Patriots held the nation's highest scoring team 21 points under their average and improved to 3-0 this season against the Manatees.
SCOF also entered the game the nation's leaders in assists per game (23.8), field goals made per game (37.2) and second in the country in field goal percentage (53.0 percent).
CF kept the Manatees well short of these marks.
SCOF made just 33.8 percent of its shots, made 25-of-74 shots and dished out just 16 assists.
The Patriots kept SCOF point guard Michael Sanchez out of sync, as the freshman finished with just two points on 1-of-8 overall shooting and an 0-of-6 clip from beyond the arc.
Sanchez had averaged 13.5 points and 8.0 assists in the first two meetings with CF this season.
KEEPING IT GOING: CF kept SCOF out of its game, as the Patriots did what they have all season long.
Entering the tournament, the Patriots were 10th in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 38.1 percent and held the Manatees well short of this mark.
CF also entered the game averaging 89.7 points and scored 90, as they won their third straight opening round game at the state tournament.
ANOTHER MILESTONE: Earlier this season, CF coach Tim Ryan earned his 200th career win in a 105-103 victory over SCOF on November 14.
On Thursday, Ryan earned his 225th career victory, as the Patriots knocked off the Manatees for the third time this season.
SUCCESS AGAINST THE MANATEES: Rodell Wigginton and several other CF players continued their strong play this season against SCOF.
Wigginton led the Patriots with 20 points in the win over the Manatees on Thursday and has averaged 19.7 points in three matchups this season against SCOF.
Rasham Suarez (17.3 points), Eugene McCrory (15.7 points) and Jordan Parks (12.7 points) also continued their stellar play against the Manatees.
Parks has avearged 16 points and 10 rebounds in the last two games against the Manatees.
THIS AND THAT: CF is now 17-15 all-time at the state tournament and has made 17 appearances. ... Wigginton scored 15 of his team-high 20 points after halftime and made 6-of-11 shots over the final 20 minutes. ... Parks and McCrory combined for 17 points in the second half, as the Patriots outscored the Manatees 48-38 over the final 20 minutes. ... CF held a 51-40 rebounding edge in the win, aided by a 28-24 advantage on the offensive glass.
