Off Day: Thoughts and Coaching and Skills Camp | The Big ...

While the Spurs have been lollygagging — both lollying and gagging — through March, I have been busy. I attended a Spurs’ game, I attended a basketball skills camp, and I’m about to start as an assistant coach with an AAU team. Let’s take the dive…

Cory Joseph

We are 7 games into the Cory Joseph era as starting point guard and I’m thrilled with his performance. Since he’s been called up (8 games including the Kings game when Tony got hurt), he’s averaging 19 minutes per game while putting up 8 points, 2.3 assists, 0.9 turnovers, shooting 64% from the field, 75% from 3-pt, and 85% from the line with 2 rebounds and 1 steal.

Right now, he’s getting the DeJuan Blair treatment. He’s starting the first and third quarters and getting a quick shift late in the 2nd and that’s it. Cory might not be our back up point guard of this playoffs, but he’s certainly the back up point guard of the future. His minutes when Tony gets back will be telling. I’m not sure which way Pop will go with it. I could see him wanting to play Gary Neal because of his experience going into the playoffs.

Kawhi Leonard

Love him. Love him. Love him. Do you know that Kawhi has scored in double figures in 17 of the last 18 games he’s played and 13 straight? His 3-pt percentage has taken a hit, but he’s still shooting 50% from the field. I’ll be very interested to see how many shots per game he gets when Tony is back.

Skills Camp

About 10 days ago, I went to this basketball skills camp on ball handling as a volunteer coach. The camp was attended by 75-80 high school boys. I learned a ton of stuff. Select teams and skills camps weren’t around back in my day as a high school basketball player and I was blown away at how developed the young guys are.

Micah Lancaster was the featured presenter and his dribbling skills were something else. But for me, his great skill was in his presentation. He did a marvelous job of telling the kids what he expected. He wanted them to make mistakes. He told them up front. He wanted them to do things they couldn’t do and all his drills were remarkably difficult. Balls were rolling all over the gym as kid after kid lost control of his ball.

Overall, though, the skill level of the kids was amazing. Many were very talented, obviously, but a large number were also highly trained. Their ability to execute a seemingly random series of moves on command with either hand was awesome. “In-and-out crab dribble to the right, behind the back, crossover, and go”, “Behind the back, between the legs, hesitate, and go”, etc.

Coaching

It looks like I’ll be an assistant coach on a team here shortly. I’m just waiting for the details to come together this week. I’m very excited to get involved. Both from an interacting with kids stand point and from a learning the details of the game stand point. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way it is heading.
