HERSHEY – Bishop Canevin High School finished with a big flurry Friday to claim the school’s first PIAA Class AA girls’ state championship.
The Crusaders scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter to erase a five-point deficit and used a 17-5 edge overall en route to a 45-38 victory over York Catholic in the title game at the Giant Center.
Seniors Carly Forse and Celina DiPietro scored 18 points each for Bishop Canevin (27-4) . Forse hit 9 of 15 shots and DiPietro 6 of 11, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range.
The Crusaders shot 60 percent in the second half, hitting 9 of 15 shots, and 45 percent (18 of 40) for the game.
Senior Morgan Clunk had 18 points for York Catholic (29-3), which has dropped its past four title game appearances. Clunk was 6 of 12 from the floor.
The Fighting Irish led 33-28 after three quarters before Bishop Canevin mounted its monumental comeback. York Catholic made just 23.5 percent (4 of 17) of their shots in the second half and shot 35.1 percent (13 of 37).
The Irish closed with a 10-3 run late in the second quarter to forge a tie at 21 at halftime.
The state championship games are being played at the Giant Center after being held the previous six years at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center.
