On Feb. 21, the Swanville girls basketball team sponsored the “Jumpshots for Jared” fundraiser during its game against St. John’s Prep. The fundraiser was held to raise money for a young cancer victim, fourth-grader Jared Leyendecker.
The Swanville High School gymnasium was a sea of gold the night of Feb. 21, as the Swanville girls basketball team sponsored the “Jumpshots for Jared” fundraiser.
Jared Leyendecker, a Swanville fourth-grader, was diagnosed with Ewings cancer in his right foot. On Jan. 28, to prevent the spread of the cancer, doctors removed his foot.
The Lady Bulldogs sold gold T-shirts in the Swanville area to raise money to help Leyendecker’s family. They also pledged $1 for every point scored by the junior varsity and varsity teams in their games against the St. John’s Prep team.
Several area residents also pledged $1 per point to be donated to the Leyendecker family. Coaches and players from St. John’s joined in purchasing T-shirts as well, so both teams were clad in gold during warm-up drills.
Through their efforts, the members of the Swanville girls basketball program were able to raise and donate about $4,000.
