Clackamas was boosted by the return of senior wing Deeshyra Thomas, who lead the Cavaliers to a 42-31 victory over South Eugene, propelling them into the Rose Garden Arena.

Clackamas lead the low scoring game throughout, but could never quite put the game out of reach. The Cavaliers outscored the Axemen by four in each of the first three quarters, pushing their lead to 12. The Axemen outscored the Cavaliers eight to seven in the fourth, but it was too little, too late. After scoring 27 points in the first half, the Cavaliers only scored 15 in the second half. However, given how well they were playing defensively, it didn’t matter. Thomas lead the Cavaliers – and all scorers – with 18 points and nine rebounds, and junior post Erica Pagano added nine points and eight rebounds, helping the team reach their goal.

“I think we’ve done so well and surprised a lot of people. We set a goal to make it to the Rose Garden and we all worked really hard to achieve that,” Pagano said.

Two aspects stand out for the Cavaliers: defense and effort. According to the players, they have to keep it up and get better in those areas if they want to be champions.

“We just need to (play) as hard as we can and play our best defense for the whole game. We hope by doing that we can make it all the way to the championship,” Pagano explained.

Senior wing Vanessa Oakden took it one step further when she said “e can improve by communicating on defense consistently, and also by everyone continuing to give everything they have and then some. I have confidence that we can win it all, we have to play for each other, play hard and play smart.”

Next up for the Cavaliers is a game against Tigard at 6:30 p.m. March 7 in the Rose Garden Arena. This game marks the return of CHS girls basketball to the Rose Garden since Jen Reece was on the court for the Cavaliers.
