To Foul McBride Or Not To Foul McBride … That Was The Question ...

Losing games like UConn lost tonight at Notre Dame the second-guessing begins almost immediately. Geno Auriemma was pondering whether or not he should have fouled Kayla McBride prior to her hitting a game-tying 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left in the first overtime.

“Yeah, I (thought about it). But I didn’t do it,’’ Auriemma said. “And maybe I should’ve. I don’t know. I never thought that the kid would just walk up to the 3-point line and we would stand there and watch her shoot it either. It’s been that kind of year. I’ve seen a lot of things that I’ve never seen before.

The Irish had been 0-of-10 from 3-point range before McBride connected.

“We were going to make sure that Skylar (Diggins) didn’t have the ball,’’ Auriemma said. “So we took the ball out of her hands, and then I was comfortable with anybody else taking it because they didn’t shoot the ball well tonight from the 3-point line, and the team they had out there wasn’t a great 3-point shooting team. And that’s what’s just so frustrating. Only two guys are going to shoot the ball at the end of that game. One we took out because we double-teamed her, and the other one shoots the ball and they tie the game.’’
