2013 AP All America Team: First Team Selections Were Obvious

Howard Smith-USA Today Sports

On Monday morning, the five selections for college basketball’s first team AP All America squad were announced.

Michigan point guard Trey Burke and Georgetown forward Otto Porter led the way in terms of vote getting while Creighton junior Doug McDermott was among the choices for a second consecutive year. Indiana ‘s Victor Oladipo and Gonzaga ‘s Kelly Olynyk rounded out the first team selections.

Of the five players named to this honor by voters for The Associated Press, none of them should come as a real shock.

The most interesting part of the first team AP All America team is the fact that not one senior was named. Once again however, this shouldn’t come as any surprise. Burke and Porter are both sophomores, while McDermott, Oladipo and Olynyk are representatives of the junior class.

With that being said however, all of them have the potential to be first round NBA Draft selections if they make the choice to leave school early. Given their accomplishments this season, it would probably be more of a shock if any of them did decide return to school at this point, but none have made formal announcements at this time. Michigan’s Burke is the only one of the five that remains playing in the NCAA Tournament.

On a side note, McDermott’s back-to-back selections mark the 51st time that a player has earned two honors in consecutive years.
