Once again, Unity Idol took center stage at CHS on March 8 as three finalists competed for the prize of a gift card and the honor of being the 2013 Unity Idol.

Being the main event of Diversity week at CHS, Unity Idol took many hours of preparation from both the competitors and the leadership classes in charge of planning. However, some competitors were more ready than others.

“I rehearsed a little bit. I didn’t put in a ton effort into the competition. I just sang it during my spare time and made a few corrections,” Braden Mossholder, senior said. Mossholder competed with Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning.”

“Compared to what I do for choir, I would say I put in about 75 percent effort, ” he said. Mossholder had the most experience out of the competitors. He is a proud member of the CHS A-Choir and Cavalaires, and also sings with the worship team at his church.

Unlike Mossholder, Unity Idol winner, Steve Kim, senior, didn’t have the musical background or preparation that his competitors did.

“This was my first time performing in front of a crowd so large! It was very nerve wrecking and was a great experience for someone trying to come out of their comfort zone.” Kim said. “I honestly judged my performance harshly and being the last of the three to perform, I had no expectations to win.”

Luckily for Kim, he won over the audience and was voted the winner, receiving a $25 VISA gift card and the pride of being the Unity Idol, despite the challenges he faced the week of the competition.

“After I came back from DECA I had lost my voice,” Kim said, “it was very important that I could get back and sing again. I was pretty worried.”

Kim recovered just in time to perform his version of “I Miss You” by Beyonce, which he sang while playing the piano.

Nate Susi, junior, was also a stand out in Unity Idol and was close competition for Kim.

“Holy crap. Nate did so good,” Kim said.

Susi performed his version of “” with his own accompaniment he played on guitar.

Being a part of Diversity Week, Unity Idol was meant to bring students out of their shells and show their talents.

“It’s all about acceptance,” said Kim.

For the contestants, Unity Idol was a way for them to take a chance and fulfill their dreams.

“I think the only lesson I learned from all of this is that you never really know what you’re capable of until you try,” Mossholder said.

“Somethings in life are worth trying. Even if you don’t believe that you’re good enough, life has a way of showing you that you are,” Kim said.
