WIAA Div. 5 state girls basketball: Challenge not too tall for ...

ASHWAUBENON — One challenge measured 6-foot-2; the other 6-3.

Barneveld delivered enough defense Thursday afternoon at the Resch Center to cut South Shore down to size.

The twin towers that were Megan and Emily Gustafson combined for 34 points, but that was 15 points below the sisters’ average and the big difference in the Eagles’ 54-45 victory in a WIAA Division 5 state semifinal girls basketball game.

Sophomore forward Rachel Slaney — all 5-10 of her — had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for Barneveld, which will play Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in the Division 5 state title game Saturday at 11:05 a.m. Assumption (27-1), which knocked off Wausau Newman 60-37 in the earlier semifinal, dealt the Eagles (27-1) their only loss at in January in Barneveld.

Freshman Hannah Whitish and senior Madi Laube added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Barneveld. The Eagles his six 3-pointers — including five during the first half — and led by as many as 15 late in the third quarter.

Megan Gustafson, the 6-3 sophomore, led South Shore with 26 points. She also had 10 rebounds. Senior sister Emily Gustafson added eight points and 17 rebounds, but the Cardinals (26-1) turned the ball over 22 times (compared to just nine turnovers for Barneveld). ___
