College Basketball: Split with the Aggies | Texas State Sports

February 1, 2013 · 12:38 am

Texas State’s basketball teams can’t get it together on the same night.

For the fourth time this season, the men and women split against a conference opponent. Thursday night it happened in games with New Mexico State. The men suffered an 86-72 loss at home, while the women broke a three-game losing streak with a 58-49 road win.

In San Marcos, the Bobcats didn’t get the usual production from junior forward Joel Wright and couldn’t gain any traction. Wright fouled out in 28 minutes with only 14 points on 3-of-18 shooting and only two other players scored in double figures (senior forward Matt Staff and junior forward Corey Stern). Staff had his best performance in a conference game all season, as he pumped in 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished four assists and nabbed two steals.

“Joel was unbelievable on the road and he struggled tonight,” head coach Doug Davalos said. “The sad part is, we didn’t have enough guys to pick him up on a struggling night.”

Texas State only made 24 of its 66 attempts and missed 21 shots in the paint. That wasn’t the case with the Aggies, as they shot 55.6 percent in the game and threw down several huge dunks (including a 360-degree slam by guard Daniel Mullings).

“We’re Division I basketball players and you got to finish plays,” Davalos said. “You got to finish layups. You got to get dunks. You got to go up athletic and we didn’t do that.”

In Las Cruces, N.M., the Bobcat women used a team-high 21 points from senior guard Diamond Ford and double-digit outputs from junior guard Jasmine Baugus and freshman guard Erin Peoples to hold off New Mexico State.

Baugus and Peoples combined to score 25 points and grab 28 rebounds, of which Baugus had 15 and 15. Peoples only had one foul in 34 minutes.

Both Texas State teams return to action Saturday afternoon against the University of Denver. The Pioneers swept the Bobcats earlier this season.
