Both Jacob Holmen and Chris Jones have visited with team doctors in the last few days.
UNT received good news on one player and is waiting for word on the second.
UNT point guard Chris Jones, who broke his foot in a loss to Western Kentucky on Dec. 29, is recovering nicely. He is off crutches and is now just walking around in a boot. What UNT has yet to determine is if he will recover the point he can play late this season. The hope is that he can be back in time for the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
It would be a huge boost for UNT is Jones does make it back. The sophomore is averaging 10.2 points and 5.0 assists a game.
Holmen’s status is still in question. The senior did have an MRI, but the results are not back yet. Holmen has suffered three concussions in a little more than a year and has experienced some pretty severe side effects.
Tony Benford mentioned earlier this year that Holmen’s long-term health is a concern.
Whether or not he plays for UNT again will hinge largely on the results of that MRI, which should come back in the next day or so.
Holmen is averaging 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.
UNT has been horribly shorthanded since losing both players, not to mention Brandan Walton, who is out for the season with a broken foot. Clarke Overlander and Justin Patton have also been limited by injuries.
UNT’s bench has been outscored 49-1 in its last two games combined.
UNT will become a whole lot deeper and better equipped to make a run in the Sun Belt tournament if both Jones and Holmen can return.
