Ruthless Hull sweep past brave women's basketball firsts | Sport ...

UNIVERSITY OF YORK 36-60 HULL UNIVERSITY

BUCS Northern Conference 2B

The Hull women’s firsts put on a fabulous display of physical basketball this afternoon as they ran out comprehensive 60-36 winners, despite a fantastic effort from a youthful York side.

Hull leapfrog York into second place in the Northern 2B Division, but both are realistically too far off first to clinch promotion or to be too worried by relegation.

Hull got off to a quick start, immediately asserting their presence down both flanks. Despite missing two early attempts narrowly, York managed to score and bagged an excellent basket through Gilly Jago, who broke up the right and sliced through the Hull defence.

However, Hull were quick to respond, answering this early York score with one of their own, after some lazy defensive play from York.

As Hull began to make their physicality tell, York struggled to compete in the first quarter, despite some excellent play from the likes of the nippy Leona Williams, whose electric pace provided the Black and Gold with some excellent opportunities, and captain Stefania Mataragka.

Hull began to rack up the points, but their brutal presence also led to some clumsy technical fouls, and York managed to capitalise, with Jago netting a free throw to bring it back to 7-3 to Hull.

The rest of the first quarter proved a tense affair, with York pulling out all the stops to compete with the attrition with which Hull were playing, but went in at the end of the first quarter 14-10 behind.

The second quarter was more one-sided, with Hull pulling into a 19-10 lead.

Chrysanthi Stefanou managed to pull one back for York, but sadly few opportunities came York’s way, whilst Rachel Dixon of Hull managed to sink a number of shots from deep to give Hull a commanding half time lead of 36-16.

By the third quarter, York were suffering from fatigue as they struggled to live with the physicality that Hull continued to assert. As York’s players grew weary, Hull managed to impose their presence more and more on the game, Dixon again proving invaluable to give them a 46-22 lead going into the final quarter.

Magaragka and Williams threatened and there were brief periods where York looked dangerous, but by this stage the game was almost up. Hull closed out the game 60-36.

Despite the slightly one-sided scoreline, York’s women should take heart from a brave performance. Jago and Williams look like promising players for the future, and considering this firsts team is relatively new, the majority being freshers, York should be upbeat about the future of women’s basketball.

Captain Magaragka was positive at the end of the match, “I think it was a realy good game, she told Nouse. “We played a really good team. We have promise for the future, we all did a really good job and we have some good new players. We are still learning how to play with each other, but it’s always hard when you get a new team in. But I’m really satisfied.”
