When two of the top four teams in Passaic County clash, you expect a good game. And it was for a half, until Eastside blew it open behind an 18-5 run in the third quarter to get the big 54-37 division win over Passaic Tech Tuesday night.
Eastside is riding a 10-game winning streak, and this young group of Lady Ghosts have now picked up their first career wins over Kennedy and Passaic Tech this season. Eastside, made up of mostly sophomores, nipped Passaic Tech in the first meeting on Taylor Brown’s layup with seven seconds to play.
“The past 10 or 11 games, they’ve done a good job being focused,” Eastside coach Ray Lyde, Jr. said. “We knew one day this group would be pretty good, and now they’re starting to understand that.”
Everyone talks about Kennedy’s brilliant three-guard offense with Erika Brown, Morgan Taylor and Koryn Lawrence-Barrett, and rightfully so, but Eastside’s guard trio of Desirelle Salas, Kayla Diaz and Nia Adams is tough to contend with, too.
Diaz scored a game-high 15 points, Adams had 10 and Salas chipped in with eight points, and the Bulldogs couldn’t keep up with them. Brown finished with 14 points.
“We have a talented team and it’s hard to defend all of us,” Salas said. “I feel like teams are coming out for us, but we have a long way to go.”
Eastside (14-3), the No. 2 seed in the Passaic County tournament, made a strong statement that they’re the best team in the county. The Lady Ghosts are deep, talented and looking for their first county title since 2007.
