It's district tournament time for girls' basketball | Chase Glorfield's ...

Believe it or not, some high school girls’ basketball teams began their district tournaments Monday, while even more get going today, and one conference has a whole lot of time off before playing Saturday.

It doesn’t seem entirely possible that we have already advanced this far into the year. Before we know it the state tournament will be underway (a little over two weeks from now, to be exact).

Like most years, expect many games to be as intense for fans as they are for the players on the court. This is one of my favorite times of year as the atmosphere in the gyms is incredible.

Here is how the matchups shake out:

The 5A Fifth-Sixth District tournament begins today with the highest seed hosting. For some reason the No. 2 team (Madison) gets the bye instead of No. 1 (Highland). Regardless, The Rams (16-2) host No. 5 Idaho Falls (8-12) at 7 p.m. No. 3 Hillcrest (12-8) hosts No. 4 Skyline (15-5), also at 7 p.m.

One would expect Highland, who has had a stranglehold on the 5A Fifth-Sixth District for years, to come out the victor once again. Do not, however, sleep on Madison or Skyline. Either team could pull the upset.

The 4A Fifth-Sixth District tournament also has the highest seed hosting, with No. 1 Century (13-7) and No. 2 Pocatello (13-7) sitting today out thanks to first-round byes.

No. 3 Bonneville (7-13) hosts No. 6 Preston (2-17) at 7 p.m. while No. 4 Rigby (7-13) hosts No. 5 Blackfoot (3-17) at the same time. Century will get the winner of the Rigby/Blackfoot game while Pocatello gets the other victor.

This one is tough to predict. Century has been playing well, but so has Pocatello. In fact, the Indians beat the Diamondbacks last week. Bonneville is a big threat as well. In the end it might come down to who is healthier, which gives the advantage to Century.

The 3A Fifth District tournament will be held at Highland High School this year, but doesn’t begin Saturday until Saturday.

No. 1 Snake River (18-2) picked up the top spot after defeating No. 2 Marsh Valley (13-5) last Thursday, and then winning a coin flip. The Panthers take on No. 4 American Falls (4-11) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles get No. 3 Bear Lake (2-9) at 5 p.m.

Once again Marsh Valley and Snake River should battle it out in the end. It was the same way last year. Both teams boast talent and experience. Perhaps the Panthers are the hungrier group, but this one is too close to call.

The 3A Sixth District tournament will be held at Madison High School beginning today. No. 1 Shelley (11-9) takes on No. 4 South Fremont (1-19) at 6 p.m. while No. 2 Sugar-Salem (8-12) gets No. 3 Teton (4-14) at 7:30 p.m.

Expect Shelley to come out on top.

Today’s 2A Fifth District tourney features a hot Soda Springs squad (No. 1, 18-2) hosting No. 4 Aberdeen (8-12) at 7 p.m. No. 2 Malad (10-9) welcomes No. 3 West Side (4-14), also at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals and Dragons should face off in the final of this one. The edge goes to Soda Springs for its depth.

The 2A Sixth District at South Fremont High School also begins today. No. 2 seed Firth (14-6) has a bye.

The Cougars and No. 1 Ririe should meet in the final.

The district tournament has already began for the 1A D I schools, and Grace already has a win. The Grizzlies defeated Hagerman 60-43 Monday night. They will face No. 1 Butte County Wednesday in Arco at 6 p.m.

The 1A D II schools also get going today with No. 3 Rockland (10-8) and No. 6 Sho-Ban facing off at 7:30 p.m. The winner gets No. 2 North Gem (8-12). This tournament will be held at Firth High School.

Make sure you find your way to one of these high schools and check out some great basketball.
