Former IU basketball player faces gun charge after shooting incident ...

Devan Dumes MUG

INDIANAPOLIS – A former Decatur Central High School basketball star and Indiana University guard faces a gun charge related to a January incident in which police say he fired 14 shots at a home with his brother and young nephew inside.

Devan Dumes, 26, was in court Friday on charges of criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

The incident happened Jan. 9 at a home where Dumes’ brother was visiting the mother of his child. According to a report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the woman said Dumes showed up at her home in the 6600 block of Hazelhatch Drive and asked for the keys to a recording studio.

When Dumes’ brother refused, the men started to argue. The woman described Dumes’ eyes as “red and droopy” and suspected he was under the influence. His speech was also slurred, according to the woman’s account.

The woman noticed a gun on Dumes’ hip and told him to leave. According to the report, Dumes pulled his gun and started shooting, prompting the woman to dive to avoid being shot.

He then climbed into his Range Rover and drove off. His brother got into another vehicle and chased after him.

When officers arrived, they found 14 bullet holes in the house and 14 empty .40-cal ammo shells in the driveway.

Police eventually arrested Dumes in the case. He faces a March 23 trial.

Dumes was a star basketball player at Decatur Central High School who began his college career at Eastern Michigan. He eventually transferred to Indiana University, where he played from 2008 to 2010.
