Photo of the Day: Odyssey Sims consoled after defending champion ...

Former Baylor player Perry Jones III, who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder, consoles Baylor Bears guard Odyssey Sims in the locker room after the loss to the Louisville Cardinals at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City March 31, 2013. Louisville beat Baylor 82-81. (Vernon Bryant/The Dallas Morning News)

Vernon said this game was one of the best he’s ever shot. And that’s a lot of games. Sims launched a prayer at the buzzer that wasn’t even close as Louisville hung on shock the top seed and defending champion.

Celtics-Knicks Grades | Boston Celtics Basketball - Celtics news ...

Chris Wilcox, PF 12 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -11

The Celtics needed Wilcox to step up in Garnett’s absence and he was a virtual no-show. Wilcox’s low-light of the night was missing a hook shot from a foot away.

Brandon Bass, PF 22 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | +5

Bass spent a lot of time switching on to Carmelo Anthony and was adequate. As for his offense, Bass gets a lot of his good looks when the ball is moving and he finds himself switched onto a smaller defender, open of a midrange jumper, or blowing by a recovering defender. No ball movement? This is what you get.

Jeff Green, PF 35 MIN | 10-14 FG | 5-8 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 27 PTS | -14

Green was one of the few guys that actually brought it tonight. It’s a shame to waste an excellent offensive performance from Green when everyone else put up a stinker. He was assertive and comfortable.

Paul Pierce, SF 32 MIN | 6-16 FG | 8-10 FT | 15 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 24 PTS | -11

It’s amazing to see Pierce be so effective on the glass. Despite the lack of lift, Pierce still managed to pull down 15 boards through relentless hard-work. Although, I could have done without some of the early shot clock three attempts.

Avery Bradley, PG 24 MIN | 1-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 2 PTS | +5

Bradley was in foul trouble for most of the evening which really limited his most useful on-court attribute: his defense. We’ve been saying Bradley’s offense needs to come around for quite a while now, but now it’s paramount to the C’s success. When Bradley can’t be counted on to hit midrange jumpers and corner threes, the passing angles become harder and harder to find.

D.J. White, PF 7 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +3

Why can’t he get more playing time?

Shavlik Randolph, PF 14 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -14

Not the greatest follow-up performance to the greatest performance of Randolph’s career. The only noticeable part of Randolph’s time on the court was his man continually beating him through pick and rolls.

Jordan Crawford, SG 25 MIN | 3-10 FG | 4-4 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | -23

I really didn’t like Crawford’s demeanor in this game. He complained to the officials, took shots early in the shot clock, stepped into some long-twos, and chucked threes when the C’s were down big late in the game.

Courtney Lee, SG 28 MIN | 5-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | -17

Whenever the Celtics needed a big shot to get back into the game, Lee was there to throw up a brick. I’m going to chalk it up to getting his ankle back under him because I’m a glass half-full kind of guy.

Terrence Williams, SG 19 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -7

Please take it to the basket whenever you get into the game.

Jason Terry, SG 21 MIN | 3-7 FG | 1-1 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | -11

Terry was brought to the C’s to hit open threes. He did not do that effectively tonight.

Kevin Garnett, C DNP LEFT ANKLE MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Once again, A+.

Doc Rivers

Rivers did little to motivate his team to get back into the game. He also only took a single timeout (if memory serves) to attempt to right the ship. Tonight was one of those games where getting thrown out may have been Rivers’ only play to light a fire. I hate those kinds of games.

A legend speaks: Alumnus Kurt Rambis reflects on his NBA career ...

I have always been a basketball lover. I played as a child throughout elementary school. Like many other children my age, I had dreams of making it big as a superstar in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Those ambitions were shattered in middle school, though, when I learned that there was something called “defense,” and that other people would actually try to prevent me from scoring. Faced with the fact that I was not NBA material, I sadly put away my basketball shoes and resigned myself to watching the sport on television, accepting my fate as a basketball junkie who would never hit the hardwood or get shoe sponsorships. Little did I know that only a few decades ago, less than two miles away from my house, lived an NBA legend: Kurt Rambis.

When I arrived at the school as a freshman and went into the gym for my first rally, my eyes scanned the rafters. I zoned in on a jersey that read “54 — Rambis.” I recognized that name as belonging to Lakers player from the 1980s. But I never realized that he had attended the school. Ever since then, I was fascinated by Rambis. I knew that before I left the school, interviewing Rambis was something I wanted to accomplish. Two years, an ambitious tweet, dozens of emails and one kind agent later, I received my opportunity.

Rambis moved to the city as a child and attended local public schools. He grew up around basketball, albeit an informal variety. Since there were no leagues for youth at the time, Rambis played with his neighbors and friends in outdoor courts.

“We would just go down to the local junior high and shoot baskets outside,” Rambis said. “There was no league, no parental supervision, nothing like that.”

Rambis’ first exposure to organized basketball was in high school. Understandably, many of his greatest memories from high school are the victories that his team achieved.

“We had a really good freshman team,” Rambis said. “And then sophomore year, we ended up going to the quarterfinals of the area tournament. In my junior and senior years, we ended up winning CCS … and we ended up playing at Stanford. We all grew up together, that’s what was fun about it … some of us went all the way back to elementary school.”

Rambis’ path to the NBA was not a smooth one. After graduating from the school, Rambis attended Santa Clara University. He was then drafted to the NBA by the New York Knicks but was cut and went overseas to play in Greece for one year. Upon returning, Rambis tried out for and was given a contract by the Los Angeles Lakers, who won the national championship that very year. The Lakers team Rambis played for was known as the Showtime Lakers and is considered to be one of the greatest teams of all time, boasting notable players such as Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

“There were obstacles in my way, so I didn’t feel for sure that I was going to make it [to the NBA] until I actually did,” Rambis said. “It was a culmination of great joy; we ended up winning a championship, and I ended up starting my rookie year. It was pretty amazing. We enjoyed each other as teammates … it was just an incredible time.”

Rambis later played for the newly founded Charlotte Hornets. In one game, he made the game winning shot against a Chicago Bulls team led by the most famous basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan.

Upon retiring as a player, Rambis served as a coach for the Lakers. He coached the Lakers for one season when Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, two legends infamous for their poor relationship, were on the team.

“They were both young, they were both trying to establish dominance on the team, they both kind of had that alpha dog personality, so there was a lot going on in the locker room, we’ll put it that way,” Rambis said.

He later served as an assistant coach for the Lakers and later the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Currently, Rambis is a broadcaster for the Lakers with Time Warner Cable.

Looking back, Rambis has only fond memories of his time in the school.

“I had a chemistry class that I enjoyed, [an] English class too. I had a great time in high school. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the classroom and playing and the friends that I had there. I always look back on high school as one of the greatest times of my life. I hope that everyone else that’s gone to [the school] looks at going to school there … that way.”

College Basketball Coaching Carousel: Flip Saunders Rejects ...

Here’s the latest on the always-wild, always-fun college basketball coaching carousel:

UCLA hired Steve Alford Saturday. Who replaces Alford in New Mexico? The players want Craig Neal, who was Alford’s top assistant for the last six years. This makes sense. A Top 20 team all season that will retain everyone (unless Tony Snell goes to the NBA) doesn’t need to do something dramatic. I’m all for keeping Neal.

Minnesota, which obviously didn’t land Shaka Smart, has reportedly been rejected by NBA retread Flip Saunders. Despite end-of-days chatter from an ink stained wretch in Minnesota, this isn’t a bad thing. The guy’s never spent a day as a college coach and he’s 58. Not a big loss at all.

Nobody seems to have any clue what USC is doing. There appears to be more interest in Spring Football than who USC is going to hire to try and turn around a struggling program that hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 since 2007. Florida Gulf Coast’s Andy Enfield has surfaced as a candidate, according to the LA Daily News.

Cal tops LSU 73-63 to reach round of 8 - seattlepi.com

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A strong second half and much better free throw shooting propelled California over LSU, sending the Bears to the round of eight for the first time in program history.

Layshia Clarendon scored 19 points to lead California to a 73-63 victory over LSU on Saturday night.

"We are in the Elite Eight, one game away from New Orleans," Clarendon said. "This is awesome."

In a ragged game in which neither team shot well, California made 26 of 41 free throws to stay ahead of LSU. That was significant because Cal missed eight of its last 11 free throws in its previous game against South Florida, and ended up needing overtime to win.

"We need to step up and hit our free throws," Clarendon said. "That's what we finally did."

Clarendon had just two points in the first half, when the teams were tied at 26. But she scored 17 in the second half as Cal outscored the Lady Tigers 47-37 for the win.

"We were us in the second half. We were Cal," coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "I'm so incredibly proud of this group."

Gennifer Brandon had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Brittany Boyd added 14 points for second-seeded Cal (31-3), which will play Georgia in the Spokane Regional final Monday night. Fourth-seeded Georgia beat top-seeded Stanford 61-59 in Saturday's opening semifinal.

Theresa Plaisance had 15 points and 12 rebounds for sixth-seeded LSU (22-12).

Adrienne Webb, who also scored 15 for LSU, said her team gave Cal too many chances at the free throw line in the second half.

"We were putting them on the line and they were knocking down free throws," Webb said.

Plaisance said the plan was to send Cal to the free throw line in hopes they would miss and LSU could get the rebound and score.

The Lady Tigers were in the game until a scoring drought late in the second half ended their chances. They were seeking their first berth in the round of eight since 2008.

After the score was tied at 26 at halftime, Cal opened the second half with an 8-2 run for a 34-28 lead.

"Our intensity might have slacked up a little bit," Webb said. "We came out a little flat."

But Webb, Shanece McKinney and Bianca Lutley scored consecutive baskets for LSU to tie the score at 34-34.

The teams traded the lead several times after that.

Mikayla Miles hit a 3-pointer to cap a 9-2 run that put Cal ahead 46-40.

Brandon sank two free throws and a field goal to help the Bears take a 54-45 advantage, their biggest lead to that point, with 7:44 left. Boyd's 3-pointer pushed Cal's lead to 58-46 with 5:20 left.

LSU, meanwhile, went more than five minutes without a field goal and fell behind 62-46. Webb broke LSU's field goal drought with 2:28 left in the game, but by then the Lady Tigers trailed 64-49.

Cal shot just 37.9 percent in the game, but made 50 percent of its shots in the second half. Cal had the edge in rebounding, 42-41.

The Lady Tigers shot 38.8 percent, and they committed 16 turnovers to 11 for Cal.

LSU coach Nikki Caldwell said her team missed too many easy shots. But she was proud of her team for overcoming adversity and clawing their way to the round of 16.

"These young ladies came together," Caldwell said. "They put LSU back on the map as a dominant program."

Neither team shot well in a low-scoring first half.

California took a 9-4 lead before LSU went on an 8-2 run to go up 18-16. The teams traded baskets after that and two free throws by Cal's Brandon tied the score 26-all at halftime.

LSU shot 40 percent in the first half, and was led by Plaisance's eight points. McKinney, a 6-foot-4 forward, had five blocks in the first half for the Lady Tigers. Cal shot just 29 percent in the half, and Clarendon was held to just two points.

"I really talked to them at the half about not being frustrated," Gottlieb said. "They try to disrupt you and make you uncomfortable."

LSU and Cal were playing for the first time since their sole previous meeting in 1981.

Cal's 31 wins extended the team record set this season. Cal tied Stanford for the Pac-12 regular-season title, and lost to UCLA in the conference tournament.

Clarendon credited Gottlieb with keeping the players pointed in the direction that has led to the round of eight.

"As a player, you just kind of try to play day by day and practice and you're in the tournament and you just try to stay really focused on every game," Clarendon said. "I think Lindsay, of all people, knew we were capable of this."
