This term saw the end of four Year 13 student’s highly successful basketball careers at Helsby High School.
The U19 team’s last 32 round loss vs. Oldham Sixth Form College was Sean’s, James, Jack’s and Patrick’s last game representing the school.
At their own age group this was just their seventh defeat in five years of competitive basketball and the first time they had experienced defeat outside of a National Finals competition.
The boys continuing commitment to school basketball is especially noteworthy considering that after a two point defeat in the 2011 U16 final to Barking Abbey, co-captains Kyle (Bristol Flyers Basketball Academy) and George (Everton F.C.) were no longer around for the 2012 season and this season starters James and Cameron (both Priestley College Basketball Academy) together with sixth man Zac (McDonald’s) were no longer part of the team.
As senior players this year the boys showed maturity and took on greater responsibility helping to develop the younger Year 10 and 11 players that now made up the rest of their squad. A fifth consecutive finals appearance was perhaps unrealistic considering the age of the team and the loss of five of the first six players but the boys effort was never in doubt.
The boys have been a credit to themselves, their families and the school, always representing Helsby High to the highest possible standards. Hopefully they will be able to use the lessons learned both on and off the court to help them be successful in the rest of their lives.
Quotes
“I started off in year 7 knowing nothing about basketball. Now in year 13, seven years later, I have played at the highest level of school basketball, playing in three national finals (winning two) and representing Cheshire for four years. Relationships that I have formed on the court I will have for the rest of my life and the banter we had with each other will form some of my fondest memories.” (Patrick)
“Basketball has been an important part of my time at Helsby High School. Over my years as part of the team it has given me a lot of memories and a lot of top quality banter that I will never forget. My only regret is that I never dunked it in a game!” (Jack)
“Although I spent most of my time as a back-up player I thoroughly enjoyed my past seven years on the team. I wasn’t a key player on court but threw the banter around before and after the game whether we won or lost. I could not recommend Helsby High School basketball highly enough to any other student.” (James)
“Throughout my time at Helsby High School basketball has been one of the highlights. The discipline and mental strength that I gained has helped me in many other aspects of my life. The friendships and memories will stay with me throughout my life and the fun and banter was at another level when it came to Helsby High Basketball.” (Sean)
