BRIDGEPORT – Kastine Evans buried a 3-pointer with about 2:18 remaining to stop Delaware’s momentum and Kentucky advanced to the Elite Eight with a 69-62 victory Saturday afternoon in the Women’s NCAA Tournament at Webster Bank Arena.
The Blue Hens (32-4), who trailed by 14 at the half, whittled the Wildcats’ lead down to 62-60 with 2:45 remaining, but would not get any closer after Evans’ buried her trey. Former UConn recruit Elena Delle Donne finished with 33 points in her final game at Delaware. Jennifer O’Neill led Kentucky (30-5) with 19 points and A’Dia Mathis added 16. The Wildcats advance to play the winner of UConn-Maryland Monday night at the WBA.
Besides Delle Donne, who had 17 points, the rest of the Blue Hens struggled to produce points in the first half and UD trailed 41-27 at the break.
Prior to Trumae Lucas’ three-point play and Lauren Carra’s 3-pointer in the final minute, Delle Donne and Danielle Parker (four points) carried the load. UD made just 8 of 22 shots in the half, but was 10-for-10 at the foul line (Della Donne made nine shots).
On the flip side, the Wildcats got 13 points from O’Neill, who his three of the team’s five 3-pointers in the half, and Mathies added nine points. Kentucky also enjoyed a 24-11 edge on the glass.
In the Blue Hens two previous NCAA tourney wins they were down at the half, but the 14 points against the Wildcats was the largest deficit and proved too much to overcome.
