BYU basketball: Cougars ready for test vs. Mercer

Provo • Not a lot of college basketball fans in the West are familiar with Mercer University, but the BYU basketball team has learned a lot about the Bears and their under-the-radar program over the past four or five days.
"We know that they are very good," BYU senior Brock Zylstra said. "No question about it."

The Cougars (22-11) and Bears (24-11) clash tonight at the Marriott Center in an NIT second-round game. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPNews, which is channel 207 on DirecTV, channel 402 on Comcast systems and channel 142 on Dish Network.
The winner of tonight’s game in Provo will take on the winner of tonight’s Louisiana Tech-Southern Mississippi game in the third round Wednesday.
Mercer arrived in Utah on Saturday night and got in a workout at the Marriott Center. The Bears practiced off-campus Sunday, and the Cougars didn’t practice at all Sunday, per school rules.
"It is a hard situation for us, not practicing the day before a game," Zylstra said. "But we will be fine."
For BYU, a key will be getting point guard Matt Carlino to play as well as he did last Tuesday in the second half of the 90-79 win over Washington. He scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and had all nine of his assists in the second half.
"The second half was phenomenal," Zylstra said. "The first half he didn’t play as well as he would like, but when he gets going, and he is running and passing the ball and knocking down shots, we roll. .... When he is running and pushing the ball, we are kind of hard to stop."
