To nobody’s surprise, VCU head coach Shaka Smart is staying put.
It has been a similar scenario over each of the past few years now, ever since Smart took the Rams on their magical run from the First Four to the Final Four back in 2011. Smart however, wants nothing to do with a program outside of VCU, once again proving his loyalty to the Rams.
According to a number of reports, VCU and Smart agreed on a contract extension on Wednesday which will keep him in Richmond through the 2022-23 season.
This extension comes on the heels of interest from both UCLA and Minnesota , both of whom will now have to look elsewhere for replacements. At the age of 35, Smart is just getting started and his resume is already through the roof. Including the Final Four run back in 2011, Smart has taken the Rams to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Most recently here in 2013, the Rams earned a five seed, but were ousted by No. 4 Michigan this past Saturday.
VCU is the only heading coaching position that Smart has held in his time at the collegiate level. Smart was totaled 111 wins in four seasons already, so it’s not secret as to why the Rams would want to keep him around.
The Rams finished their first full season within the Atlantic 10 Conference with a second place finish here in 2013 and will look to continue their competitive edge within the league in the years to come.
