Maryland coach Brenda Frese has been here before when it comes to facing UConn in the NCAA regional semifinals. She was an assistant coach at Iowa State when the Cyclones defeated the Huskies 64-58 in Cincinnati in 1999.
Frese will look to get another win over UConn Saturday at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. The Huskies are 18-2 all-time in the Sweet 16, also falling to Stanford 76-59 in Kansas City, Mo. in 2005.
“My sister (Stacy) was the starting point guard on that team,’’ Frese said. “This is good genes there. But my program at Maryland doesn’t know that. But in terms of drawing on how you have to come in and be confident, I think a lot of teams and programs come in and, obviously, everybody knows the tradition and the history and sometimes I think it can be really daunting before you even tip the ball up.’’
Stacy Frese led Iowa State with 16 points, three rebounds and five assists 14 years ago.
Tamika Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies. Stacy Hansmeyer had 11 points and nine rebounds
UConn shot 29.9 percent from the field (3-of-26 3-pointers) and had 18 turnovers.
“From our end at Iowa State, we had a team that could really shoot the ball, had a lot confidence,’’ Frese said. “I know Connecticut was different. They had a lot of injuries that year. So we went into that region just really confident that we could be successful.’’
Here is what Frese had to say when she was asked if she would happy if UConn went 3-of-26 from 3-point range again …
“I’d be thrilled,’’ Frese said laughing. “I’d thrilled. I would love for them to be able to do that.’’
