UK women’s basketball signee Makayla Epps of Marion County High School in Lebanon, Ky., was named the 2013 Kentucky Miss Basketball on Friday by the Kentucky Lions Foundation at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel in Louisville, Ky. The award is chosen by the state’s high school coaches.
Epps, a 5-foot-10 senior point guard, led the top-ranked Lady Knights to a perfect 39-0 record and Marion County’s first state tournament title in eight appearances. The Lady Knights became the first undefeated state champ since Marshall County in 1984.
En route to the title, Epps averaged a team-high 23.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.3 steals and 5.5 rebounds per game. She also was named the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year and was selected to the prestigious McDonald’s All-America team, the first Lady Knight in school history with that distinction. She is a three-time All-State honoree who compiled over 3,300 points in her prep basketball career.
As Miss Basketball, Epps will wear the No. 1 jersey for Kentucky when it faces Indiana in the states’ annual all-star games. The 2013 games will be held June 14 at Louisville’s Freedom Hall and June 15 at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Epps, who will be the ninth Kentucky Miss Basketball to play for the Wildcats, joins a talented recruiting class for UK Hoops next season. It includes fellow McDonald’s American Linnae Harper (Chicago/Whitney Young HS) and high school teammate Kyvin Goodin-Rogers (Lebanon, Ky./Marion County HS). Kentucky’s recruiting class ranks in the top-10 by all the major recruiting services, including No. 5 by the All-Star Girls Report, No. 8 by Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and No. 10 by Blue Star Basketball.
