San Bernardino Valley College and Riverside City College won’t have a victory bell (above) at stake, as is the case in football, but the schools who stare at each other from across the county line will square off in the first round of the men’s basketball regional playoffs Friday night at 7 p.m. in RCC’s Wheelock Gym.
The Tigers have been seeded seventh in Southern California and the Wolverines 10th. RCC is 19-8 overall and finished second to Saddleback in the Orange Empire Conference. SBVC is 20-8 and finished second to Chaffey in the Foothill Conference.
Both schools have men’s and women’s teams in the playoffs. RCC’s women (16-12) host LA Pierce (16-12) Wednesday in a first round game matching 16th and 17th seeds. SBVC’s women (24-5), seeded fifth, open at home Saturday night against Santa Barbara City College.
Mt. San Jacinto (26-2), seeded third in the women’s bracket, opens Friday night against Cuesta (19-10). The MSJC men (19-10) play at home Wednesday night against Fullerton (14-13).
The state championships will be March 16-17 in Sacramento.
