Women prepare to bring home the hardware

By Tony Viola, Sports Editor

If the West Liberty women plan on winning the West Virginia Conference Tournament, then the 81-39 shalacking it dealt Ohio Valley during Monday’s play in round one is as great a start as any.

“No disrespect to Ohio Valley, but they’re 2-24,” Coach Lynn Ullom said. “If you want to play somebody, that’s the type of game you want to play at the beginning of the tournament.”

With the win, the Toppers advance to face Shepherd at 3 p.m. in Charleston at the Civic Center on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

“I think it’s one of those weird years where you just don’t know what teams are going to do on a nightly basis, including us,” Ullom said.

“We’re not good enough to win this thing down there if we don’t play by committee. We need to get contributions across the board. We did that throughout the season.

“Every team that’s down there now we’ve beaten. We’re the only team that can say that. So, if we (have) beaten every team, it’s not inconceivable (that we can win it all), but there’s probably five or six teams down there that are saying, ‘Hey there’s a lot of parity, if we can get a matchup, who knows.’ There’s certain matchups and certain teams we don’t want to see, but it should be interesting. I think every game is going to be a really good one.”

Should the women win the quarter final matchup on Wednesday, the team will move on to face the winner of W.Va. Wesleyan and Fairmont.

Southworth named Player of the Year

West Liberty University women’s basketball standout Hillary Southworth has been selected as the 2013 WVIAC Player of the Year while Hilltopper teammates Meghan Wiseman and Liz Flowers were also honored when the conference’s women’s basketball coaches announced the results of their All-WVIAC balloting.

Southworth also moved up to first-team All-WVIAC status after earning second-team laurels a year ago.

Wiseman was a second-team All-WVIAC selection in the league-wide voting while Flowers was named to the WVIAC All-Freshman Team.

Southworth’s first-team berth makes this the 15th consecutive season that the West Liberty women have had at least one first-team All-WVIAC selection. There has been a Hilltopper on the All-WVIAC first-team honor roll in 23 of the last 24 seasons, dating back to 1989-90.

A 5-10 junior guard from Twinsburg, Ohio, Southworth joins Joanna Bernabei (1997), Jaana Kotova (2001) and Tori Hansen (2009) as West Liberty’s WVIAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year honorees.
