BSM girls earn third seed in basketball playoffs | Sun SailorSun Sailor

Benilde-St. Margaret’s enjoyed a productive regular season but will face a demanding challenge in its attempt to win the Section 6AAA girls basketball championship.

The Red Knights placed second in the North Suburban Conference with a 14-2 record, two games back of champion Robbinsdale Cooper. BSM carries a 19-7 overall record into the playoffs.

But three other Section 6AAA teams besides the Red Knights have achieved success in the regular season winning 18 games or more.

No. 1 seed Richfield finished 23-3 in regular-season action and is the section’s defending champion. Second-seed Chaska has 19 wins entering post-season play and fourth seed Waconia has posted 18 victories.

BSM is the third seed and was scheduled to play sixth-seed Holy Angels in the quarterfinals Feb. 26 at home. Winner of that game advances to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the site of the highest seed. Championship game is 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7.

Cooper defeated BSM 48-42 in a game that clinched the league title for the Hawks.

BSM’s leading scorers were Grace Coughlin (17), Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod (11) and Abby Minea (11).

Benilde-St. Margaret’s rebounded from that defeat with a 66-60 victory over Spring Lake Park Feb. 22.

The Red Knights trailed 35-28 at halftime before outscoring Spring Lake Park 38-25 in the second half.

Jackson-Sherrod led BSM scorers with 16 points. Grace Coughlin contributed 14 points and Minea had 13 points. Gretchen Sattler finished with eight points and Allie Coughlin came through with seven points.

Boys beat Spring Lake Park

Benilde-St. Margaret’s improved its boys basketball record to 7-17 by defeating Spring Lake Park 61-39 Feb. 22 in North Suburban Conference play.

Three BSM players scored in double figures — Nick Birney (12), Sam Lynch (11), Chris Bell (10) and Jack Hathaway (9).

BSM almost upset first-place Cooper 66-64 Feb. 19 in another conference game. The Red Knights led 35-31 at halftime before the Hawks rallied in the second half.

Birney scored a team-high 20 points. Matt Lilienthal netted 15 points and Colin Polarek added 14 points. Jayson Alexander had eight points.

“We have been playing pretty well,” said BSM coach John Moore. “We have made shown improvement and been competitive losing several close games.”
