St. Anthony is back. Though its 83-game winning streak was snapped by Prep power St. Benedict’s, the Friars still are the odds-on favorite to win Non-Public B, and then the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions. To win North Jersey, Non-Public B, St. Anthony, No. 1 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, will have to get past Hudson County rival Hudson Catholic, ranked No. 2. And to win the group, St. Anthony will have to get by whoever wins the combative South Jersey, Non-Public B section, which includes Roselle Catholic, Gill St. Bernard’s and the Patrick School of Elizabeth.

St. Anthony’s is the Team to Beat
Winning streak or no winning streak, two-time defending Tournament of Champion St. Anthony is the best team in the tournament. They’ll be favored in any game they play the rest of the season, the loss to St. Benedict’s motivating them even more. Even with a team that doesn’t have as much offensive talent as we’re used to seeing, the defensive ability and coaching of Bob Hurley is enough to strike fear into anyone in the state. St. Anthony is 87-1 in its last 88 games and is seeking its 28th state group championship.
Others to watch: Hudson Catholic, The Patrick School, Roselle Catholic, Gill St. Bernard’s, Wildwood Catholic, Marist, Hawthorne Christian, Dwight Englewood, St. Rose, Rutgers Prep
