Feb. 2 -Athletic Director Mimi Molchan wasn’t happy when she sighted the seven freshly-shaven mohawk haircuts sported by the IASAS boys basketball team.

“We’re at home, we have the home crowd, we have a bunch of nice kids, and it just looks inappropriate for the tournament,” Molchan said.
Players should rely more on their skill and hard work, she said.
“The haircuts bring unnecessary attention to the SAS players and are a distraction.”
International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) sophomore Mihir Joshi said the
haircuts made the SAS players seem unfriendly.
“If we had known there was a problem, we wouldn’t have done it,” senior Andrew Crema said.
Seven players decided to get the same haircut to unify as a team.
“It’s a team-bonding, ‘we’re all in it together’ type of mentality,” junior Lucas Phillips said.
“IASAS is here, and it is coach Norman’s last year, so we wanted to do something different,” senior Alex Berenger added.
Senior Johnny Goode said that the seven were surprised that the haircuts offended anyone.
Maria Crema, a team mom for the SAS boys, said that they were not trying to create trouble.
“It is unfortunate because they didn’t mean to upset anyone,” Crema said.
Molchan allowed the team to keep their haircuts for this tournament but said she would not permit it for future IASAS tournaments. She said the only exception is the boys swim team tradition of wacky hairstyles for the 2nd season pep rally.
“It is a very different situation,” Molchan said. “It is only for the pep-rally, and every member of the team shaves their head after 24 hours.”
“Starting Monday SAS athletes will not represent SAS if they wear their hair like that,” Molchan said.
